STUDY

  • Please remember who this book was written to: the Jewish Christians. The Jews saw Moses as the leader to follow and build their entire religion around, and so this letter was written to reiterate who Jesus is, and how much more supreme He is to Moses, angels and the Mosaic covenant.

  • Hebrews 1:1 says that God spoke to them at many times and in many ways.  List a couple prophets that God spoke to and describe how they heard from God.

  • What verses in this chapter reference Jesus as being part of the creation of the world?

  • What did the author say is the duty of an angel?

APPLICATION

  • This chapter exalts Jesus above the angels, Moses and the Mosiac covenant.  The Jews were supposed to realize the supremity of Jesus by reading this.  What verse made you have a deeper understanding or reminded you of His supremacy?

  • How does this chapter change what you think of Jesus?

  • What was your opinion of angels before reading this chapter?  Did this text change what you thought about them?

PRUNING ME

I loved this chapter, in that it really exalts Jesus. These were my favorite:

  • Verse 3:    He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
  • Verse 13:    And to which of the angels has he (God) ever said, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?"

I also think there are people with the wrong idea about angels.  Some misconceptions may be that we become angels when we die or that they are as powerful as Jesus. This chapter definitely answers those misconceptions by saying that Jesus is in higher authority than the angels, and that angels are sent to serve believers. Do you see Jesus as powerful and majestic as this chapter describes?  For me it definitely painted a better image of His supremacy!
