Verse for Thought:

13    Be watchful, stand firm in the faith...

Paul says, "Be watchful." What do you suppose that means?  Well, since this is the closing chapter to 1 Corinthians I would assume it means to be watchful of the all warnings principles and instruction given throughout this book. Let's recap:

  • Paul preaches against divisions of the church, but unity among believers.
  • He proclaimed Christ crucified without any fancy words, but spoke plainly to them so that the people would not accept the wisdom of men, but the power of God.
  • Paul describes a bit of what the ministry of apostles looks like- not luxurious by any means.
  • He warns against sexual immorality, idolatry and other sin within the body
  • He gives guidelines and advice for married, unmarried and widows
  • He explains how through the example of food offered to idols,  to not do things to make your brother stumble
  • Paul describes his rights as an apostle
  • He defines the order of submission between husband, wife, Christ and God.
  • He explains the Lord's Supper, quoting Jesus
  • Paul educates us on the spiritual gifts, especially prophecy and tongues
  • He instructs us on the importance of love
  • He defines the critical components of Christianity: believing Jesus died, was buried and rose from the dead. He shows us that we also need to believe that His followers will be resurrected with Him at the end of time.
